Sinhagad

SinhagadSinhgarh, or Sinhgad (Marathi: सिंहगड, The Lion's Fort), is a fortress located roughly 30 kilometres southwest of the city of PuneIndia. Previously called Kondhana (Marathi: कोंढाणा), the fort has been the site of many important battles, most notably the battle of Sinhagad in 1670. It was also strategically located at the centre of a string of other forts such as RajgadPurandar and Torna.
It lies 24 kms. from Pune and was one of the most impregnable fort of Western India.Shivaji won the fort in 1670,but lost his ablest commander Tanaji Malusare over here. The fort is built at the edge of a sheer precipice which was scaled by using iguanas and ropes.
